Younger players such as James Trafford and Rico Lewis could be included in negotiations if necessary

Manchester City are planning a major midfield rebuild this summer, with Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson identified as key targets.

The club are seeking to refresh their midfield options in a recruitment drive that could cost up to £200m. Both Tonali and Henderson are valued at around £100m each and are part of a small group of elite Premier League central midfielders who will be in serious demand in the summer.

There is some uncertainty over several senior players at City. Rodri has been linked with Real Madrid, while Bernardo Silva could also leave, with no progress in contract talks. Rodri recently addressed his future, suggesting he is open to a move to Real Madrid.

When asked if a move to the Spanish giants should be ruled out, Rodri said: “No, no. There have been a lot of players who have taken that path. Above all, when they’ve not done it directly, but over time. For me, you can’t rule out the best clubs in the world.”

City’s interest in Tonali has been strengthened by reports that he could be allowed to leave Newcastle if they fail to secure Champions League qualification this season. Newcastle are currently 12th in the Premier League and a place among Europe’s elite next season is unlikely.

To facilitate a deal for their target midfielders, City could include players in negotiations, with James Trafford, Rico Lewis, Issa Kabore and Juma Bah among those reportedly being discussed.
