Both players return at a crucial period as Manchester City push for Champions League qualification
Manchester City received a significant boost ahead of their crucial Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers, as both Rodri and Erling Haaland have returned to training following long-term injuries.
Rodri, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2024, has been sidelined since September due to an ACL injury. His absence has been suggested in some corners as a major factor for City’s fall from grace this season. Manager Pep Guardiola gave further confirmation on Thursday that Rodri has resumed training, although he added that the midfielder’s return to action will depend on the medical team giving clearance to avoid any setbacks.
“The moment the physio and doctor say that Rodri can start to play minutes he will start to play minutes. But the doctors have to tell me,” said Guardiola.
Erling Haaland, who is still City’s top scorer this season despite niggling injuries, has also returned to training for the first time since an ankle problem in March. But although he is back on the training pitch, Guardiola intimated that Haaland is unlikely to feature against Wolves on Friday.
City are currently fourth in the Premier League and locked in a tight battle for Champions League qualification. Guardiola described the club’s next remaining fixtures as “four finals” if they are to make it back among Europe’s elite next season. Meanwhile, Wolves are on a six-game winning streak and will be looking to continue that run at the Etihad Stadium.
