A 47-year-old man has been charged with racially abusing Antoine Semenyo during Liverpool’s Premier League match against Bournemouth on 15 August at Anfield.

The charge was of a “racially aggravated public order offence”. Police from Merseyside Police confirmed the allegation and said the man, Mark Mogan of Dovecot, Liverpool, was conditionally bailed ahead of an appearance at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on 22 December.

The alleged incident happened in the 29th minute of the game. Play was halted and the referee ordered the offending spectator removed from the stadium.

Semenyo later scored twice after half time as Bournemouth came back from two goals down, before Liverpool went on to win 4-2.

The club issued a statement at the time, condemning racism and discrimination “in all forms.” The Football Association likewise expressed concern, pledging to take “appropriate action” if the allegations were confirmed.
