Academy graduate struggled for gametime last season and has yet to feature at all this term after two games

Kobbie Mainoo is considering a move away from Manchester United after falling out of favour under head coach Ruben Amorim.

The 20-year-old midfielder emerged as one of the club’s brightest sparks in the 2023-24 season and was hailed as the future of both United and England’s midfield. He was called up to the national team and became a key player at Euro 2024, even starting in the final against Spain.

But Mainoo struggled for scraps of gametime last season under Amorim and has yet to feature at all this season after two games played.

Amorim has steadfastly stuck to a 3-4-3 system at United, which has left Mainoo without a clear role. The Portuguese coach is understood to have concerns over the academy graduate’s pace. Midfielders in the system are expected to cover a lot of ground given the numerical disadvantage at the centre of the park.

This season Amorim has seemed to prefer Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in the role. Last week, the United head coach said that Mainoo must fight for the position with Fernandes, the club captain who has played nearly every game since he joined in 2020, and was recently retained by the club despite a £100m offer from the Saudi Pro League.

Mainoo does not fancy his chances and is understood to be eyeing a Champions League club, although options may be limited given the transfer deadline closes next Monday.

United are reportedly open to letting Mainoo leave, but will only do so for a suitable offer.
