Defender says it would be “silly” to leave United as soon as you could
Harry Maguire has confirmed that Manchester United rejected approaches for him during the summer and indicated he would be open to extending his contract at Old Trafford.
The defender joined United from Leicester City for £80m in 2019 and is entering his seventh season at the club. His existing deal was due to expire this summer, but United exercised a one-year option in January to keep him under contract until 2026.
Maguire revealed there was interest from other clubs in recent months but they “got a quick response”.
“I’m pretty sure the club have made it clear this summer that I can’t leave on any terms with other clubs enquiring about things and my position with my contract,” said Maguire.
The 32-year-old regained his place in the squad under Ruben Amorim after a difficult spell when he lost the captaincy and slipped down the pecking order.
His form last season ensured that his stock rose high from the perspective of both the fans, the club and the manager, even if his playing time has had to be managed due to injuries.
Maguire’s contract will run out in June 2026, and he can either leave as a free agent or sign an extension. The player says his preference is to stay.
“I have something in my mind about what I want to do and what I want to be,” said Maguire. “I don’t want to put it out there to everybody but it’s an amazing club to play for and you’d be silly if you wanted to jump out of it as soon as you could.”
United’s new football director, Jason Wilcox, has been overseeing contract talks since his arrival in the spring, and Maguire is expected to be among the players whose futures are addressed in the coming months.
Maguire insists the club are moving in the right direction under the new hierarchy.
“Since I started six years ago to where it is now, it’s in a completely different place in terms of the structure behind the management staff,” he said.
