Argentine midfielder hailed his countryman as the “best in the world” in his position

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has publicly urged the club to sign Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero, calling him the “best in the world” in his position.

In an interview with TNT Sports, Mac Allister was asked to name one player he would like to see join him at Anfield. Without hesitation, the Argentine international picked his compatriot Romero, citing the Spurs defender’s calmness, leadership and ability.

“Oh, Cuti [Romero]. He’s a player I love,” said Mac Allister. “The way he speaks and plays, sometimes you feel like he’s too much because he makes everything so easy. He gives me confidence. For me, he’s been the best centre-back in the world for several years.”

The duo have been a key part of the Argentina squad that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa America. However, in the Premier League they have been on opposing sides, with Mac Allister first playing for Brighton and then for Liverpool.

There is no indication that Liverpool want to strengthen in central defensive areas, with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah all at Slot’s disposal. Their attention is instead on the full-back positions, where they have signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen to replace the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, while having also opened talks with Bournemouth for Milos Kerkez, who would provide competition for Andy Robertson at left-back.

Romero has previously said that he is “happy” at Tottenham and they make him “feel important”, although he has also expressed interest in playing in Spain, saying “I’d love to play in La Liga”.
