Locatelli Misses Late Penalty as Juventus Play 1-1 Draw with Sassuolo

Juventus were held to a 1-1 draw by Sassuolo, with Manuel Locatelli missing a late penalty, dashing their hopes of going fourth in Serie A.

Juventus’ hopes of going fourth in Serie A were dashed as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sassuolo at the Allianz Stadium. The hosts had taken the lead inside the opening quarter-hour, with Kenan Yildiz scoring after a neat build-up.

The Bianconeri continued to press, with Yildiz forcing Arijanet Muric into a stop, and Andrea Pinamonti missing a chance to level at the other end. Juventus were producing some neat passages of play, but Sassuolo’s defense held firm.

The Neroverdi needed a response after an underwhelming first-half showing, and they got just that seven minutes after the restart. Pinamonti poked home Domenico Berardi’s low ball into the box, levelling the game.

Unsurprisingly, Juventus pushed hard to restore their lead, testing Muric’s reactions with a back-post header from Jeremie Boga. But Sassuolo’s goalkeeper held firm, and the game was heading for a draw.

Four minutes from time, Jay Idzes was penalized for handling in the area, giving Locatelli the chance to win the game. However, Muric guessed the right way, holding a rather tame effort to ultimately deny Juventus what would have been a third straight league win.

A point isn’t enough to see Luciano Spalletti’s men climb above Como, who remain ahead on head-to-heads having yet to play this weekend.

Meanwhile, despite a creditable point, Sassuolo’s one triumph in nine away games against sides starting the matchday above them explains why they find themselves 11th.

The draw is a blow to Juventus’ European ambitions, and they will be frustrated to have dropped points at home. Sassuolo, on the other hand, will be pleased to have taken a point from a tough away fixture.
