Initial assessments suggest the Italy international faces months away

Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni has vowed to “give everything” to return as soon as possible after unfortunately ending his exciting Liverpool debut with an injury.

The 18-year-old joined Liverpool from Parma this summer for £26m and was making his first appearance against Southampton, before going down with a problem in his leg.

Initial assessments suggest he has sutained a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury, which could potentially rule him out for more than half of the season.

Leoni took to Instagram to thank supporters and express his feelings.

“I want to sincerely thank every single person who has shown me support in this difficult moment,” said Leoni.

“It wasn’t the debut I had always dreamed of, but I will give everything to be back playing in this magical stadium as soon as possible. Thank you so much!”

Leoni impressed in Serie A last season but Arne Slot has carefully managed expectations on the young lad. Tuesday’s match was only his first appearance for the club, with the experienced Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate playing regularly at the heart of defence while Joe Gomez has come on as a substitute when needed.

However, the Italian’s absence now leaves the Premier League champions worryingly with only the three players as their specialist centre-backs. It could make the club more deeply rue the failure to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi on deadline day.
