Liverpool will go ahead with their scheduled preseason fixture against Preston North End on Sunday, the club have confirmed.

The friendly had been under review following the fatal car crash last week that claimed the lives of forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. But after internal discussions and consultations with the squad, Liverpool have decided to fulfil the fixture.

A number of first-team players returned to training on Tuesday, after resumption of pre-season activities had been postponed. Several members of the squad and staff travelled to Portugal to attend Jota’s funeral over the weekend.

Floral tributes have already been laid outside Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre and at Anfield over the past few days, as fans and teammates continue to mourn the 28-year-old.

Jota had been on his way to a ferry terminal in Santander when his car veered off the road and caught fire. The Spanish Civil Guard said their investigation remains ongoing, although they have suggested the vehicle may have been travelling above the speed limit. A final report is expected to be delivered to a regional court in the coming weeks.
