The £125m man has scored just three goals in all competitions and his latest injury piles on the frustration at Anfield

Liverpool are sweating over the fitness of Alexander Isak after the striker was forced off shortly after scoring in Saturday’s Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Isak was brought on at the break in north London and made an immediate difference, finishing off a brilliant team move in the 56th minute to put Liverpool ahead against a Spurs side already down to 10 men. But the Sweden international had suffered a scissor-like tackle from Micky van de Ven as he tried to shoot and remained on the ground after scoring.

Manager Arne Slot admitted after the match that the early signs were not encouraging.

“I don’t have any news on him but if a player scored and then gets injured and doesn’t try to come back on the pitch, that’s usually not a good thing,” Slot said. “But I cannot say anything more than that. It’s just a gut feeling but nothing medical to say about it. I haven’t spoken to him yet.

“It’s a good thing that he scored. A good goal assisted by Florian Wirtz.”

The injury piles on the frustration at Anfield over Isak. The 26-year-old arrived from Newcastle United in a high-profile and contentious £125m move late in the summer window but has struggled to find rhythm. His goal against Tottenham was only his third in all competitions and he has also suffered a groin problem earlier this season.

Slot chose to focus on the positives of Isak’s performance.

“That’s what we would like to see happening a lot,” said Slot about the well-worked goal. “A good finish, a good pass. Let’s not be too negative yet. We don’t know yet. Let’s hope he’s back with us soon, but it’s difficult to say to you.”
