Club’s pre-season activities were postponed until Tuesday following Jota tragedy
Liverpool’s first-team squad returned to training on Tuesday morning, five days after the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva.
The players arrived at the AXA Training Centre in Kirkby to find the gates lined with flowers, scarves and handwritten tributes bearing the club’s words: “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Jota and his brother died in the early hours of last Thursday in a high-speed car accident near Zaragoza, Spain. According to an update from the Spanish Civil Guard, Jota is now believed to have been behind the wheel of the Lamborghini that veered off the road and caught fire.
The two men were reportedly on their way to a ferry terminal in Santander to return to the UK for the start of Liverpool’s preseason when the crash occurred.
Some Liverpool players had been expected to start preseason on Friday while most of the squad were to resume on Monday, but the club postponed all football activities following news of Jota’s death.
Manager Arne Slot and several members of the first team attended the funeral in Gondomar, Portugal on Saturday.
Thousands of fans have visited Anfield in recent days, leaving flowers, jerseys and scarves in memory of the Portuguese international, who joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and scored 65 goals in 182 appearances.
Liverpool are scheduled to play their first preseason friendly against Preston North End on 13 July, but it remains unclear whether the fixture will proceed. The club are understood to be considering their options and will make a final decision in consultation with the players.
