Liverpool 1-4 PSV Eindhoven: Nightmare for Arne Slot as Premier League champions collapse at home

At first Liverpool held on. Fought even. But as the night wore on confidence drained and they began to concede freely, crashing to an incredible 4-1 defeat at home to PSV Eindhoven.

The loss was Liverpool’s ninth in 12 matches across all competitions. This is now the club’s worst run of results in more than 70 years.

There are more ugly statistics. Liverpool have conceded three or more goals in three straight matches for the first time since the early 1950s, and this loss matched their heaviest-ever home defeat in European competition.

First, captain Virgil van Dijk conceded a ludicrous early penalty after handling from a corner, allowing Ivan Perisic to give the Dutch visitors a sixth-minute lead. Liverpool steadied themselves when Dominik Szoboszlai swept home the equaliser after Cody Gakpo’s shot was parried. In the minutes after, they even looked like they could go ahead.

But then they somehow grew more despondent. Their body language worsened. After the break PSV regained control while Liverpool stood by and watched, the football happening around them.

Guus Til ran ahead of Milos Kerkez to finish a brilliant team move that cut straight through Liverpool’s midfield and defence. From there, the mistakes multiplied.

A missed clearance from Ibrahima Konate gifted PSV another opening; Ricardo Pepi seized the ball and turned Van Dijk and Konate inside out before blasting a shot off the upright. Couhaib Driouech scored from the rebound, before adding a fourth on the counter in stoppage time. Long before the final whistle, seats were emptying around Anfield.
