Arne Slot believes Liverpool can get revenge for first leg defeat
When they face Manchester City on Sunday, Liverpool will have a chance to showcase just how much they have improved since the poor weeks of the earlier part of the season, according to Arne Slot.
The Reds have won by emphatic scorelines in their last two games, thrashing Qarabag 6-0 to finish third in the Champions League table, before defeating Newcastle 4-1 at Anfield last weekend. Liverpool have only won one of their last six in the league but are still much improved compared to last autumn, when they lost nine out of 12 games played.
“I mainly remember the game we played at Etihad and we were outplayed for large parts in the first half,” Slot said. “So [City’s visit to Anfield] is another moment to see where we are in the development of this team. We know the importance of a result.”
City defeated Liverpool 3-0 when they faced at the Etihad in November, Pep Guardiola’s side dominating the game from start to finish, although there was some refereeing controversy when Virgil van Dijk’s header was ruled out for offside and City were awarded a penalty for a soft Ibrahima Konate foul on Jeremy Doku.
“It also helped City our goal was disallowed and they got a penalty after VAR interference,” Slot said. “Conceding a set piece did not help either and these factors do affect the game. This time, we want to show a different side of things.
“It’s the end phase of the season so results matter more. We have shown apart from that first half against City and Palace that we can compete with every team. We have not found the consistency for the results but we have shown against all the names that we can compete.”
