Liverpool 2-0 Fulham: Ngumoha 36, Salah 40

Liverpool secured their first Premier League victory since February with a 2-0 win over Fulham at Anfield, thanks in no small part to an impressive display from 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha.

The teenager marked his second league start with a fine goal in the 36th minute and was involved in Mohamed Salah’s strike four minutes later, giving under-fire manager Arne Slot some breathing space after a difficult week. The quarter-final defeats to Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain had ramped up pressure on the Dutchman.

Fulham were passive for much of the match and rarely threatened. Marco Silva’s side looked uncharacteristically sluggish, while Liverpool were sharper and more aggressive, although Bernd Leno was not seriously tested in the opening 35 minutes.

The game changed shortly after when referee Anthony Taylor played advantage after Cody Gakpo was wrestled to the ground by Sander Berge. Florian Wirtz collected the loose ball and found Ngumoha on the left. The winger beat Timothy Castagne with a series of step-overs before releasing an impossibly sweet curling shot around the defender and his teammate Joachim Andersen, out of reach of Leno, and into the far corner.

The goal made Ngumoha Liverpool’s youngest league scorer at Anfield at 17 years and 225 days, breaking a 14-year record previously held by Raheem Sterling with 17 years, 317 days.

Ngumoha was involved again as Liverpool doubled their lead. He took on three Fulham players and feigned a repeat of his curling shot before clipping a pass to Gakpo, who turned the ball to Salah. The Egyptian swept it inside Leno’s far corner for his sixth league goal of the season.

Fulham improved after the break following the introduction of Emile Smith Rowe and Sasa Lukic. Smith Rowe should have done better when found unmarked inside the area by Ryan Sessegnon, but his first-time volley drifted wide of Giorgi Mamardashvili’s goal. Lukic also had a goal ruled out for offside as Fulham rued a lethargic outing.
