Liverpool have held initial talks with the representative of Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, as uncertainty continues to surround the future of Darwin Nunez.

Mateta’s agent met with the club’s recruitment team recently to explore the possibility of a transfer this summer, according to Foot Mercato. No formal bid has been tabled.

Mateta had an impressive campaign for Palace last season, the best of his career so far. The French forward scored 17 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions.

Given his form, he has also been linked to other clubs besides Liverpool, including Manchester United and AC Milan. But it appears to be the Merseyside club who have made concrete steps at this stage.

Nunez’s future at Liverpool is uncertain. The Uruguayan made 30 appearances for the club in the Premier League last season but only eight of those were starts. He also scored only five goals.

Napoli are reportedly keen on the striker but it is not clear if they can meet Liverpool’s €60m valuation. Liverpool have not ruled out keeping the Uruguay international, and he scored in his first appearance back in pre-season, in a 3-1 win over Preston North End.
