Premier League champions eye bargain signing of Jeremie Frimpong after confirmation of Alexander-Arnold exit

Liverpool have identified Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong as a leading candidate to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer.

According to GiveMeSport, the Reds are exploring a move for the Dutch international, whose £30 million release clause is seen by the club as a potential bargain for a player of his profile. Frimpong has been a standout performer in Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side this season, praised for his pace, attacking output and work rate on the right flank.

Alexander-Arnold’s departure, confirmed earlier this week, leaves a significant gap in the Liverpool squad, both in defence and in attack. While Conor Bradley has impressed in spells and is expected to see more playing time next season, it might be a huge ask to expect the 21-year-old Northern Irishman to step into Alexander-Arnold’s highly creative boots – which is why Liverpool are determined to bolster their options with a new signing in the right-back position.

The 23-year-old Frimpong has scored nine goals and registered seven assists in all competitions for Leverkusen this season. His performances have drawn interest from several top clubs, but Liverpool are reportedly among the frontrunners.

New manager Arne Slot, whose title-winning squad was made up almost entirely of Jurgen Klopp’s signings, will be looking to reinforce key areas to maintain his blistering start in the Premier League next season.

Liverpool’s remaining fixtures this season against Arsenal, Brighton and Crystal Palace may offer a chance for Bradley to prove himself before the summer, but plans to bring in another right-back are already underway.

Frimpong’s attacking instincts make him stylistically similar to Alexander-Arnold, although he plays a more traditional wing-back role and the departing England international is much more technically gifted. Should a move materialise, Slot may need to tweak Liverpool’s tactical setup to get the most out of Frimpong.
