Exit brings Liverpool’s income from player sales this summer close to £200m

Darwin Nunez has officially left Liverpool and joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, the club confirmed on Saturday.

The deal is understood to be worth around €53m. It brings an end a three-year spell for Nunez at Anfield.

Liverpool said in a statement: “Liverpool FC can confirm Darwin Nunez has completed a permanent transfer to Al-Hilal, subject to international clearance.

“The Uruguayan’s three-year spell with the Reds concludes after he finalised a switch to the Saudi Pro League side today.

“Everybody at the club would like to thank Darwin for his contributions and wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

The 26-year-old joined Liverpool from Benfica in June 2022 in a deal worth an initial €86m. During his time at the club, he made 143 appearances and scored 40 goals.

However, he never fully convinced and his role diminished last season when he started just eight Premier League games.

Earlier in January, Al-Hilal’s rivals Al Nassr made a £60m bid for Nunez, which was rejected because Liverpool needed him for the title run-in.

Napoli and AC Milan were also interested in the Uruguayan this summer, but their terms could not match Liverpool’s valuation and Al-Hilal ultimately outbid them.

Nunez’s exit brings Liverpool’s income from player sales this summer close to £200m, after the club made close to £10m from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid and sold Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich (£65.5m), Caoimhin Kelleher to Brentford (£18m) and Jarell Quansah (£35m) to Bayer Leverkusen.
