Defender was crticised for his poor form earlier in the season but has now demonstrated sufficient improvement

Liverpool are increasingly confident of tying down Ibrahima Konate to a new long-term contract, despite continued interest from Real Madrid.

The defender, whose current deal is approaching its final stages, is keen to resolve his future before heading to the World Cup. According to reports in France, negotiations between the player and Liverpool have intensified in recent weeks after an initial offer last year fell short.

Talks have been ongoing for around 18 months, with both sides now working to reach an agreement. Liverpool remain optimistic they can secure a renewal and fend off Madrid, who have been monitoring the situation closely and are prepared to act if discussions break down.

The Spanish club have reportedly outlined their long-term plans to Konate’s representatives, continuing a strategy of targeting players nearing the end of their contracts. However, current indications suggest the 26-year-old is leaning towards staying at Anfield.

Despite his importance under manager Arne Slot, negotiations have hit a sticking point over salary. Konate is understood to be seeking a significant pay rise on his current deal, believed to be worth around £150,000 per week, to reflect his role in the team.

Slot had criticised a serious dip in the defender’s form earlier this season, but since then Konate has responded with some improved performances and has remained a key figure in Liverpool’s defence.
