Striker’s return comes as club push for Champions League qualification in the run-in
Liverpool have been handed a big boost with the return of striker Alexander Isak to team training following his lengthy absence through injury.
The 26-year-old is set to rejoin the squad on Thursday after recovering from a broken ankle and fibula sustained during a tackle in the match against Tottenham Hotspur in December. The Swede required surgery and has been sidelined since.
Isak’s return comes at a crucial stage of the season, with Liverpool contending with Chelsea, Aston Villa and Manchester United for a Champions League place. It also coincides with a positive moment for his national team Sweden, who have secured qualification for the upcoming World Cup. Sweden confirmed their place at the tournament on Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over Poland in the European playoff finals.
“To have him again in a team that’s usually generating quite a lot chances – and maybe not immediately from the first moment that he can start – but to have him back for the last two months is, I think, very helpful for us,” head coach Arne Slot said.
Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in a British-record £125m move last summer following a transfer saga. His return offers a significant attacking option for Slot during the final stretch of the campaign.
Slot said: “Alex is in a really good place because Sweden qualified for the World Cup yesterday evening and apart from that he’s going to train with the group again for the first time tomorrow.”
