Agreement makes Isak the most expensive signing in Premier League history

Liverpool have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Alexander Isak in a deal worth £125m, setting a new British transfer record.

The Sweden international is due to travel for a medical ahead of Monday’s deadline after a fee was finalised between the clubs.

The move ends a long-running saga in which Isak pushed to leave St James’ Park, having been absent from Newcastle’s pre-season tour and left out of Eddie Howe’s squad since the start of the campaign.

Earlier this month, the 25-year-old issued a public statement accusing Newcastle’s hierarchy of breaking promises made to him, adding that a transfer was in the best interests of all parties.

The agreement makes Isak the most expensive signing in Premier League history, surpassing the £115m Chelsea paid Brighton for Moises Caicedo in 2023, and the £116m that Liverpool themselves could end up paying Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz.

The champions paid £100m for Wirtz, but add-ons could take the deal to £116m, surpassing the fee for Caicedo and placing Liverpool on first and second place for the most expensive deals for British clubs.

Isak scored 62 goals across all competitions in his three seasons with Newcastle, helping the club win their first trophy in 55 years and qualify for the Champions League last season.
