Leverkusen holding out for a fee in the region of €150 million for Wirtz; the expectation is that a compromise may be found in the coming weeks
Liverpool’s ambitious move for Florian Wirtz has hit a significant roadblock after Bayer Leverkusen rejected a second bid worth €130 million.
The newly crowned Premier League champions are eager to bring the Germany international to Anfield this summer, but will need to dig even deeper if they are to convince Leverkusen to sell.
The 22-year-old Wirtz has emerged as one of Europe’s most coveted talents following a stellar spell under Xabi Alonso. The attacking midfielder was instrumental in Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning season and remains under contract until 2027, leaving the club under no pressure to sell.
Despite the lack of a release clause, Liverpool have already submitted two formal offers. Both have been turned down, with Leverkusen remaining firm in their valuation, according to Sky Germany.
“Not much has changed: the second offer for Florian Wirtz was not accepted in its current form,” Sky reported. “Negotiations are ongoing. Both teams want a quick agreement, Leverkusen have a different overall package in mind than the one currently being offered by Liverpool.”
The German club are holding out for a fee in the region of €150 million, according to Sport BILD. Such a figure would comfortably eclipse Liverpool’s current transfer record, which is the €100 million acquisition of Darwin Nunez in 2022.
Wirtz is said to favour a move to Anfield over rival interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester City due to the project under new head coach Arne Slot, which he sees as exciting. While personal terms are not expected to be an issue, the main hurdle remains Leverkusen’s price tag and reluctance to part with their prized asset unless their full valuation is met.
The expectation, however, is that a compromise may be found in the coming weeks. Leverkusen are open to discussions, and Liverpool appear determined to make a statement signing as they look to ensure sustained success after Slot’s phenomenal debut season.
Liverpool have already signed Jeremy Frimpong from Leverkusen this summer, which fills the hole left by departing right-back Alexander-Arnold. Bournemouth’s Mils Kerkez is also reportedly on their radar to provide depth to the left-back position.
A host of players are expected to depart Anfield this season, including the holder of the club’s current transfer record, Darwin Nunez.
