Bayer Leverkusen hopes to have Alex Grimaldo back for their Champions League clash with Newcastle United, after the Spanish left-back missed Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Augsburg due to a minor injury.

Leverkusen head coach Kasper Hjulmand revealed that Grimaldo had been carrying a minor issue since returning from the international break. Despite playing in several matches, including games against Wolfsburg, Manchester City, and Borussia Dortmund, Grimaldo’s condition had worsened, prompting the coaching staff to give him a break.

“We pushed Grimaldo very hard so that he could play, but he was carrying a knock,” Hjulmand explained. “We tried in training, but it wasn’t possible for him to play.” Leverkusen’s director for sport, Simon Rolfes, echoed Hjulmand’s sentiments, stating that Grimaldo’s need for a break had become increasingly apparent in recent games.

“We hope he can play on Wednesday against Newcastle, but we don’t know yet,” Hjulmand said, adding that they have hope for Grimaldo’s availability for the match against Köln on Saturday as well.

Grimaldo’s absence was filled by Ernest Poku, who played on the left flank against Augsburg. Leverkusen will look to have Grimaldo back in action as they face Newcastle United in the Champions League.
