Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri has undergone minor heart surgery, the club said on Monday, adding that the procedure “was successful.” The 66-year-old coach had been suffering from an irregular heartbeat.
The club said Sarri would resume his duties with the team in the coming days. Assistant coach Marco Ianni will fill in for him temporarily.
Sarri returned to Lazio this summer after previously managing the club from 2021 to March 2024. He led Lazio to second place in Serie A in 2023.
Before coaching full-time, Sarri worked as a banker. He’s known for guiding Empoli to Serie A promotion in 2014 and leading Napoli, Chelsea, and Juventus to notable successes.
Sarri’s notable achievements include Napoli’s two second-place Serie A finishes, Chelsea’s Europa League win in 2019, and Juventus’ Serie A title in 2020.
Lazio currently sits eighth in Serie A with 24 points from 17 games. They host third-placed Napoli on Sunday.
