Lautaro Martinez overtakes Diego Maradona in Argentina’s all-time top goalscorer charts after scoring a brace in Argentina’s 6-0 win over Puerto Rico.
Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has achieved a remarkable milestone, surpassing Diego Maradona and drawing level with Hernan Crespo in Argentina’s all-time top goalscorer charts. Martinez scored a brace in Argentina’s 6-0 friendly win over Puerto Rico in Miami, taking his international goal tally to 35.
The 26-year-old striker came off the bench in the second half and made an immediate impact, scoring twice to help Argentina secure a convincing victory.
This achievement puts Martinez joint-fourth in Argentina’s all-time top goalscorer charts, ahead of Maradona’s 34 goals and level with Crespo’s 35 goals.
Martinez’s next target is Sergio Aguero, who has 41 international goals for Argentina. However, there’s still a long way to go to catch Gabriel Batistuta’s 56 goals and Lionel Messi’s impressive 114 goals.
As football returns to domestic activity, reports claim that Martinez will have limited training time before Inter’s Serie A test against table-topping Roma on Sunday. Despite this, he’s likely to start alongside either Ange-Yoan Bonny or Francesco Pio Esposito, given Marcus Thuram’s unavailability.
