Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk corrected his earlier error by scoring a late winner for Liverpool to win 2-1 against West Ham at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds have been battling their way to results in recent games, determined to crawl to the Premier League finish line if they must. And it was no different against West Ham.

Besides getting the win regardless and continuing on that stoic trek, Salah was perhaps the only real positive to pick from Liverpool’s play. Only a few days after he extended his stay at Anfield for two years, the Egyptian king proved just why the club were willing to shell out £400,000 a week to keep him.

In the 18th minute, Ibrahima Konate released Salah down the left side and the winger turned away from West Ham full back Oliver Scarles, before poking an absolutely sublime pass across the face of goal and right into the path of Luiz Diaz, who was left with very little to do.

“Sometimes goals are about the goal scorer – this one’s about the assist,” said Jamie Carragher on commentary duty for Sky Sports.

However, West Ham were not prepared to just roll over. They piled pressure upon pressure on Liverpool. Kudus’s clever curl was poked onto the crossbar by Allisson, and the Brazilian also did really well to prevent Jarrod Bowen from scoring after he had been played through by Lucas Paqueta.

West Ham’s pressure was finally rewarded in the 86th minute, when Aaron Wan Bissaka’s cross put Van Dijk under pressure and he played the ball off Andy Robertson’s leg into his own net.

The Liverpool captain corrected the error three minutes later, however, when he headed in Macallister’s corner in front of the Kop to secure all three points.

The Reds now need only six to clinch the title, after Arsenal were held at Brentford on Saturday.
