Winger dropped a hint on social media by posting an image of Maradona wearing the No 10 Barcelona shirt

Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal is set to become the club’s new No 10, a number worn in the past by legends such as Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho, and Lionel Messi.

The 17-year-old winger is expected to be formally unveiled with the shirt number ahead of the 2025-26 season, following Ansu Fati’s imminent departure to AS Monaco.

Yamal, who has worn No 19 since making his senior debut, dropped a significant hint this week by posting an image of Maradona wearing the No 10 Barcelona shirt on social media.

With Fati on the verge of leaving the club, the No 10 will become vacant for the first time since Messi’s departure in 2021. Fati was once billed as Messi’s heir and handed the number three years ago, but the player has so far struggled to fulfil expectations amid injuries and inconsistent form.

Barcelona are expected to officially announce Yamal’s new number during a special event planned around his 18th birthday in July. The club are understood to be preparing for a formal presentation that will include the launch of their new kit.

Alongside Maradona, Messi and Ronaldinho, other notable figures to have donned the iconic Barcelona No 10 jersey include Rivaldo, Romario and Stoichkov.

Yamal, widely regarded as one of the brightest talents to emerge from La Masia in recent years, enjoyed a breakout 2024-25 season for Barcelona, in which he finished top of La Liga’s assist charts with 15.
