Barcelona winger has been at the centre of various controversies
Lamine Yamal will reduce his social media activity after being at the centre of various controversies over the past year.
The 18-year-old was at the centre of attention during last month’s clásico, following comments he made about Real Madrid in the build-up. He was booed by Madrid fans at the Santiago Bernabeu and after the game a scuffle ensued among players from both teams, with Dani Carvajal and Yamal at the centre of it.
The original comments were not made on social media, but the debate spilled over in the days that followed.
The teenager’s relationship with girls has made headlines, with images and photos going viral on social media, including those of the player with Argentine singer Nicki Nicole who it has been claimed he was in a relationship with.
A recent study by Spain’s Observatory Against Racism and Xenophobia (Oberaxe) found that the youngster was the most racially abused La Liga player online, more than any other player in the league combined.
Yamal and his close advisers have therefore agreed to reduce his visibility online, according to Mundo Deportivo. The player plans to post far less frequently across his social channels in order to quieten the commentary surrounding him.
People close to Yamal feel that he is overexposed and are eager to reset the narrative around the teenager while he focuses on his football.
