Forward says he and his teammates are “starting to understand” what the manager wants

Kylian Mbappe has backed Real Madrid to win “as many titles as possible” under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Alonso took charge in the summer following Carlo Ancelotti’s departure. After impressing at Bayer Leverkusen, the former Madrid midfielder was handed his first major managerial role at one of Europe’s most demanding clubs.

Early signs have been positive, with Madrid having won nine of their 10 games in all competitions so far.

“It’s an important year for Real Madrid,” said Mbappe. “We’re starting to understand what the manager wants from us, but we have to improve to get where we want to be.”

Madrid finished trophyless last season under Ancelotti, losing four times to rivals Barcelona, twice in finals, and getting demolished home and away in the Champions League quarter-finals by Arsenal.

Mbappe pointed out that Ancelotti and Alonso were different managers from different generations.

“Xabi wants to help a lot, but he’s younger,” said Mbappe.

“He has more need and desire to prove himself with Real Madrid, to achieve things in his first big opportunity at the best club in the world.

“We’re going to try to help him win as many titles as possible.”
