Manager Alvaro Arbeloa has warned the forward could be out for a long time

Real Madrid have confirmed that Kylian Mbappe is dealing with a sprain in his left knee, but a surgery has been ruled out.

Mbappe has been struggling with a knee problem for months, missing a few matches from December to March.

Madrid released a statement on Monday confirming that Mbappe had seen some French specialists to carry out examinations, and that a decision has been made to avoid surgery at this stage and continue the “conservative” treatment he is currently receiving.

“Following tests carried out on our player Kylian Mbappe by French medical specialists, under the supervision of Real Madrid’s Medical Services, the diagnosis of a sprain in his left knee has been confirmed, as well as the suitability of the conservative treatment he is currently undergoing,” Madrid said. “His progress will be monitored.”

The is the first time Madrid has released any official statement since the France international began experiencing the discomfort in December. Head coach Alvaro Arbeloa confirmed on Sunday that there would be no quick return for the 27-year-old.

“It’s very clear to us what’s wrong, and what we want now,” Arbeloa said. “It’s that he recovers totally from the discomfort, so he can come back at 100 per cent, with complete confidence and security.

Arbeloa has already tried to manage the situation by dropping Mbappe even in important games, including fixtures against Real Sociedad and Benfica.

His longer absence could now hurt the team even further after Madrid lost to Getafe to drop four points behind Barcelona, and are still to face Manchester City in the Champions League last 16. The Frenchman missed the league phase fixture between them, which City won 2-1 at the Bernabeu.
