Forward also a major doubt for the cup final on Sunday, were Madrid to go through
Kylian Mbappe is not expected to be available for Real Madrid in their Super Cup semi-final clash against Atletico Madrid in Saudi Arabia.
Mbappe sustained an injury in his left knee that kept him out of Madrid’s opening fixture of 2026, a 5-1 demolition of Real Betis where youngster Gonzalo Garcia filled in for him superbly, bagging a hat-trick.
Alonso said before that game that he had no idea when Mbappe would return to the lineup.
“We’ll do everything possible to make it as short as possible, so he can be ready as soon as possible,” the head coach said. “But when is that? That’s the question, I don’t know.
“In every game we make an assessment, based on how the player feels, and we take decisions based on the necessities of the game. We’ll see. We’ll do everything we can to have him back as soon as possible.”
Mbappe has been Madrid’s talisman this season. He is in top goalscoring form, netting a remarkable 29 goals in 24 appearances for Alonso’s side. But he has struggled with fitness recently, notably sitting out the Champions League defeat to Manchester City in December.
The Frenchman is also a major doubt for the final if Madrid manage to go through, according to sources close to the club. Madrid play Atletico on Thursday and potentially a final against either Barcelona or Athletic Club on Sunday.
