Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovač is thrilled with his team’s performance in the 2-0 win over Atalanta in the Champions League playoff first leg.

Speaking in the mixed zone, Kovač praised his team’s efforts, highlighting their good football and hard work. “We played good football, scored two goals, and worked well in the second half,” Kovač said. He emphasized the team’s hard work on specific areas, saying, “We were very hard-working on a few things.”

Kovač singled out Serhou Guirassy for praise, noting his goal and assist were crucial to the team’s success. “Serhou Guirassy scored a goal and provided an assist, which is exactly what we need,” he said.

The BVB coach also praised Waldemar Anton, who played a key role in defense amidst a spate of injuries. “Waldi was absolutely in charge last season, whether playing centrally or on the right wing,” Kovač said.

Anton was an example to young Luca Reggiani, who made his Champions League debut. “He’s a leader and always holds his own. He was a huge help to Luca today, too,” Kovač added. Kovač described Anton as a “rock,” a “role model,” and a “fighter”. “On and off the pitch, that’s exactly how I see him,” he explained.

Dortmund take a 2-0 lead into the second leg, and Kovač will be confident in his team’s chances.
