Kompany applauded Manuel Neuer after the veteran’s heroics helped Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Vincent Kompany heaped praise on Manuel Neuer after the veteran goalkeeper played a decisive role in Bayern Munich’s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Goals from Luis Díaz and Harry Kane put Bayern in control at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, with the German champions producing a dominant display. However, Kylian Mbappé pulled one back for Madrid to keep the tie alive.

Neuer proved crucial throughout the contest, making a string of impressive saves to deny Madrid’s attack. The 40-year-old thwarted Mbappé on multiple occasions and also produced key stops to keep Bayern’s advantage intact.

The experienced goalkeeper finished the match with nine saves, including reflex stops to deny Vinícius Júnior and Mbappé. He also rushed off his line brilliantly in a one-on-one with Vinícius, forcing the Brazilian into shooting wide from a tight angle.

Neuer’s performance earned him the Player of the Match award, with UEFA’s Technical Observer Group highlighting his composure in key moments. They praised his important saves and outstanding ability in one-on-one situations.

Kompany expressed satisfaction with his goalkeeper being recognised, stressing that special performances are required at this level. He also noted that Bayern had chances to extend their lead and hopes the attacking players can shine in the return leg.

The Bayern coach went on to praise Neuer’s remarkable longevity, describing him as one of the few players capable of maintaining elite performances over such a long period. He emphasised that even top goalkeepers rarely sustain such high standards for so many years.

Despite Mbappé’s late goal, Kompany was pleased with the result and believes it provides a strong foundation ahead of the second leg in Munich. He acknowledged Real Madrid’s quality but insisted Bayern remained dangerous and will aim to secure another win in front of their home fans.
