In an exclusive interview, John Terry spoke about England’s ‘golden generation’ and the reasons for their failure to win major trophies.
John Terry, the legendary Chelsea captain, has spoken about England’s underachieving ‘golden generation’, which included players like Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes, and David Beckham.
Despite their individual successes at club level, they failed to replicate this on the international stage, with their best finish being a quarter-final appearance in major tournaments.
Terry attributes this failure to the intense rivalry between clubs, particularly Liverpool and Manchester United, which made it difficult for players to put their differences aside and work together as a team. He recalls feeling like he was trying to unite the team, but the club rivalries were too strong.
The current England squad has also faced challenges, but they’ve made progress, reaching two European Championship finals and qualifying for the 2026 World Cup with a perfect record.
Terry believes this is the best opportunity for the team to win a major trophy, citing the mix of young talent and experienced players.
