Premier League champions remain in the market for defensive reinforcements
Liverpool have been handed a defensive boost with Joe Gomez returning to full training ahead of Friday’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth at Anfield.
The 28-year-old centre-back has recovered from the Achilles injury that cut short his involvement in the club’s pre-season tour of Asia.
Gomez returned to Liverpool last month for treatment, missing friendlies against AC Milan, Yokohama F. Marinos and Athletic Club, as well as the Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace.
But he rejoined team training on Wednesday, giving head coach Arne Slot another senior option in central defence alongside Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
Liverpool’s defensive depth has been under scrutiny since Jarell Quansah’s departure to Bayer Leverkusen, and the club have been looking to address the position.
They have approached Crystal Palace for the highly rated Marc Guehi and are in advanced talks with Parma over 17-year-old centre-back Giovanni Leoni.
Gomez’s return is unlikely to make the club complacent, as the defender has struggled with injuries in the past. Last season he made only 9 league appearances for the Reds.
