Italy secured a late 2-0 win over Moldova, but their chances of automatic World Cup qualification have slipped away.
Norway’s 4-1 victory over Estonia earlier on Thursday made it almost impossible for Italy to qualify directly for next year’s finals.
Gennaro Gattuso’s men dominated the first half, putting Moldova under intense pressure, but failed to find the back of the net. Moldova goalkeeper Andriy Kozhukhar was solid, denying Bryan Cristante and Gianluca Mancini’s attempts.
Italy continued to press after the break, but created fewer chances as Moldova defended solidly. Sandro Tonali and Mateo Retegui saw their efforts saved as Italy struggled to break the deadlock.
Italy finally broke through in the 88th minute when Mancini headed home his second international goal. Pio Esposito sealed the win with a header in stoppage time.
Italy will likely have to qualify for the World Cup via the playoffs, even if they win their final group match against Norway on Sunday. Norway’s superior goal difference also makes it more difficult for Italy to qualify, even if they beat the Norwegians.
