Forward admits being behind in match fitness but is eager to make his Liverpool debut at Turf Moor

Alexander Isak has trained with Liverpool for the first time since completing his British-record move from Newcastle.

The Swede stepped onto the pitches at the AXA Training Centre on Wednesday wearing his new club’s training kit.

Isak trained alone for much of the summer due to a stand-off with Newcastle over his future. He missed pre-season and is three full matches behind other Premier League athletes, leaving him short of match fitness as the international break comes to an end.

The forward admitted he is still behind in sharpness but says he is eager to make his Liverpool debut, against Burnley this weekend if possible.

“Of course, I think that’s the ambition,” he told reporters when asked about featuring against the Clarets on Sunday.

“However, I’ve had a tricky summer. I haven’t played any games and I’ve had restricted training, but I certainly want to play as soon as possible.”

Isak played some 20 minutes for Sweden in Monday’s World Cup qualifier against Kosovo, his first competitive action in months. A similar cameo appears the most likely scenario if he would feature at all for Arne Slot’s side at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Wednesday’s training saw limited attendance, as other Liverpool internationals will be returning to Merseyside over the next couple of days.

After the trip to Turf Moor, Liverpool face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.
