Manager hopes the striker can feature for Liverpool against Manchester City this weekend before joining up with the national team
New Sweden manager Graham Potter has named Alexander Isak in his first national team squad despite the Liverpool forward still recovering from a groin injury. Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has not been included due to a muscular issue.
Isak’s inclusion despite Gyokeres being left out suggests the Liverpool striker could be on his way back after missing the last two weeks through his injury.
Potter said he hopes the striker can feature for Liverpool against Manchester City this weekend before joining up with the national team in the international window, but revealed he was available “as things stand right now”.
“Alex can hopefully play a bit this weekend and will be in Spain on Monday,” Potter said.
Arsenal’s Gyokeres was ruled out after suffering a muscle problem that kept him out of Tuesday’s Champions League win over Slavia Prague.
Potter was appointed last month to revive Sweden’s faltering World Cup qualifying campaign, and he announced his 26-man list on Wednesday for the November fixtures against Switzerland and Slovenia.
Sweden sit bottom of Group B with just one point from four games and can only qualify through the playoffs if results elsewhere go their way.
Players will meet at their training camp in Marbella, Spain, before travelling to face group leaders Switzerland on 15 November. They will then host Slovenia three days later.
