Club have said a sale would only occur under conditions that serve their interests, but that those conditions are unlikely to happen
The standoff between Alexander Isak and Newcastle United is damaging both parties, insists club legend Alan Shearer.
Isak has publicly accused the club of breaking promises in a sharply worded post on Instagram, declaring that “when promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue”.
The striker claimed that he communicated his stance to the club long ago, and that the way the situation has been portrayed recently misrepresents what was agreed behind closed doors.
Newcastle swiftly pushed back, labelling Isak’s message “disappointing” and insisting no assurance was ever given to the player about a summer departure.
The club also said that a sale would only occur under conditions that serve the club’s interests, but that those conditions are unlikely to happen.
Earlier in the summer, Liverpool made a £110m bid for Isak but it was swiftly rejected, so quickly in fact that Liverpool concluded they would not submit another bid until the club showed a desire to come to an agreement.
Isak has since been training separately and was absent from Newcastle’s opening Premier League fixture against Aston Villa, which they drew 0-0.
Shearer told Betfair that the statement the player released has only “thrown fuel onto the fire”.
“I get that we needed to hear his side of the story and we’ve heard that now,” said Shearer. “I’m not saying I don’t believe him or I don’t believe Newcastle. I’m just saying it’s very, very messy for him and for the football club. It doesn’t benefit anyone.”
