Cristian Chivu praises Inter’s maturity in their 2-0 Champions League win over Ajax.

Cristian Chivu believes Inter’s 2-0 victory over Ajax in the Champions League was a “show of maturity” and a testament to the team’s growing confidence. The win was fueled by Marcus Thuram’s two headers from Hakan Calhanoglu’s corners, showing Inter’s ability to capitalise on set-piece opportunities.

Chivu praised the team’s tactical approach, saying they successfully neutralised Ajax’s strengths, particularly their passing in the final third. “We tried to neutralise Ajax’s strengths, which included their passing in the final third, and only allowed them to pass the ball in areas we were comfortable,” Chivu explained. “We tried to stay in their half, recover the ball as quickly as possible, and immediately go with vertical passes. It went well.”

The win was a significant boost for Inter, coming off back-to-back Serie A defeats to Udinese and Juventus. Chivu also spoke on the team’s mental strength and confidence. “It is important for the work that the lads are doing; they were close before, and tonight was a show of maturity,” Chivu said.

Young striker Francesco Pio Esposito impressed Chivu with his performance, filling in admirably for the injured Lautaro Martinez. “As I said a few weeks ago, he is a striker that the Italy team and Inter will certainly enjoy for a long time to come,” Chivu praised. Esposito’s performance was a welcome boost for Inter, and Chivu believes he has a bright future ahead of him.

Chivu also defended Inter’s decision to stick with the 3-5-2 formation. “I did want to stay with the 3-5-2, because this is what the team knows how to do,” Chivu explained. “We just wanted to add a few things, but above all to rediscover the mental strength and confidence that had been lacking.
