Inter Milan can open an eight-point lead in Serie A this weekend as AC Milan will not be in action due to the Olympics.

Inter Milan head into the weekend knowing a valuable opportunity has opened up in the Serie A title race. With AC Milan unable to play because the San Siro is unavailable for domestic football, Inter’s trip to Sassuolo could see them move eight points clear at the summit and apply real pressure on their closest rivals.

Cristian Chivu’s side are riding an impressive wave of form, extending their unbeaten league run to 11 matches last weekend with another controlled victory over Cremonese. Ten wins in that sequence have shown Inter’s growing confidence.

Despite the momentum, Inter are keen to keep expectations in check. Captain and leading scorer Lautaro Martínez stressed that the focus remains internal rather than on sending messages to the rest of the league, pointing out that the Serie A is still defined by fine margins, and if they get complacent, they can quickly be punished.

Inter’s ambitions stretch well beyond the league table. A midweek Italian Cup win over Torino secured a semi-final place, keeping alive hopes of silverware on multiple fronts. Their schedule shows no sign of easing either, with a Champions League knockout play-off against Bodo/Glimt looming later this month.

Chivu has consistently played down talk of grand targets, instead highlighting squad depth and mental resilience. With a congested calendar ahead, the Inter coach has emphasised the need for rotation and focus, insisting that competitiveness and consistency will matter more than lofty predictions.

AC Milan, meanwhile, have been forced into an unusual pause as preparations for the Winter Olympics take over the San Siro. While the break temporarily halts their Serie A campaign, Massimiliano Allegri believes the downtime could be useful, particularly after a convincing midweek win over Bologna that kept them firmly in the top-four hunt.

Elsewhere, the chasing pack continue to jostle for position. Defending champions Napoli travel to Genoa hoping to stay in the title race despite injury problems, while Juventus take on Lazio. Fiorentina, reeling from back-to-back defeats, face a struggling Torino side still fighting to escape the relegation zone.
