Inter Milan shook off their European disappointment to beat Genoa 2-0, moving 13 points clear at top of the Serie A table.
Inter were back in action after crashing out of the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Bodo/Glimt. With 10 points separating them from second placed AC Milan, they couldn’t allow their midweek misery to affect them.
The match kicked off with plenty of energy from Inter, but Genoa’s Justin Bijlow was determined to make life difficult for the league leaders.
Early on, he pulled off a string of impressive saves, notably denying Stefan de Vrij’s header and a sharp attempt from Ange-Yoan Bonny after a sloppy giveaway by Ruslan Malinovskyi.
Inter were forced to be patient, circulating the ball and testing the waters through Federico Dimarco’s dangerous set-piece deliveries, though Manuel Akanji and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were left frustrated as their early efforts missed the mark.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 30th minute, and it was a moment of pure Italian craftsmanship. Mkhitaryan lofted a searching ball toward the far post, and Federico Dimarco from an outrageously tight angle connected with a volley that flew into the far corner.
The goal left Bijlow with absolutely no chance despite his earlier heroics and ensured that Inter took a deserved lead into the halftime break.
Genoa didn’t just roll over after the restart. In fact, they started to look a bit more adventurous as the second half progressed.
Mikael Egill Ellertsson was a constant threat in the air, though his finishing left a lot to be desired, and a Vitinha strike from distance required a crucial deflection from Akanji to steer it away from Yann Sommer’s goal.
For a brief moment, Il Grifone looked encouraged, but Inter’s veteran defence and patient tempo eventually sucked the air out of the visitors’ comeback attempt.
Any hope of a Genoa equalizer was officially extinguished when Alex Amorim was caught handling the ball inside the area.
Hakan Calhanoglu, who rarely misses an opportunity from 12 yards, stepped up and sent Bijlow the wrong way with a clinical penalty. It was a goal that effectively ended the contest, allowing Chivu’s men to coast through the final minutes without any real stress.

This victory marks Inter’s eighth consecutive win in Serie A, a run of form that has left the rest of the league in the rearview mirror.
With second-placed AC Milan trailing by 13 points ahead of their match against Cremonese on Sunday, the Scudetto race is now looking more like a victory lap for Inter with every passing week.
