Real Madrid manager says he understands the player’s frustrations but downplays their significance

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has defended his decision to use Vinicius Junior in a limited capacity so far this season.

The forward is yet to complete a full 90 minutes under the Spaniard. He has been substituted in 10 out of the 12 games he has played under the new regime so far, while he has been introduced from the bench in the other two. However, Alonso waved away any concerns.

“I’m happy with what Vinicius is doing,” said Madrid’s coach. “It is still early in the season. We need everyone, I’m happy.”

Vinicius started on the bench in the midweek Champions League match against Marseille, with fellow Brazil international Rodrygo selected ahead of him. But then the 25-year-old’s hopes of playing full time on Saturday against Espanyol came to nothing when he was withdrawn in the 77th minute.

The player showed how he felt about it as he left the field, throwing a water bottle to the ground and gesturing in frustration, before going to have a word with his manager.

Alonso said he completely understood how the player felt but downplayed its significance.

“I was a player myself and when I was substituted, I didn’t like it either,” said Alonso. “I don’t think it’s a big deal that the players show their frustration.”
