Manager hopes to “see Isak in a Newcastle shirt again”

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has admitted he is in the dark over how the club’s standoff with Alexander Isak will be resolved.

Howe confirmed that Liverpool’s £110m bid for the striker was rejected but stressed that he was not part of key transfer discussions at the moment, being away in Asia.

“I really don’t know what’s going to happen next,” said Howe. “But from our perspective we still support Alex in every way, and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.

“I am very much removed from anything that’s happening back home. I was made aware that there was a bid. The bid was turned down before I even heard about it. There’s people back in England dealing with the situation.”

Howe and the Newcastle squad are scheduled to return to England on Monday, two days after their pre-season game against Tottenham in South Korea.

Meanwhile, Isak has already returned to Tyneside, having spent the last week training at his old club Real Sociedad. Discussions between Howe and the player after everyone is back in England will be vital.
