Napoli’s 2-1 win over Genoa sees them return to the top of the Serie A standings, thanks to Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Rasmus Hojlund’s goals.
Napoli came from behind to win 2-1 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Genoa had taken the lead through Jeff Ekhator’s goal in the 33rd minute, but Napoli’s resilience paid off as they scored two goals in the second half to secure the win.
The match was a closely contested one, with Genoa’s work off the ball making it difficult for Napoli to create clear-cut chances in the opening period.
Despite dominating possession, Napoli struggled to find the back of the net, while Genoa’s counter-attacks posed a significant threat. Brooke Norton-Cuffy’s brilliant run down the wing set up Ekhator’s goal, which proved to be a crucial moment in the match.
However, Napoli’s persistence paid off when Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa scored the equalizing goal in the 57th minute. Leonardo Spinazzola’s cross was aimed at Kevin De Bruyne, but the Belgian tried to connect and saw the ball loop upwards. Fortunately, Anguissa was alert behind him and stuck his neck out to head home on the follow-up.
Just 18 minutes later, Rasmus Hojlund sealed the win for Napoli with his third goal in two matches. De Bruyne sent in a cross from the left, Scott McTominay brought it down, and Anguissa’s shot was blocked. However, Hojlund was quick to react and slammed in the rebound, securing the win for Napoli.
The victory sees Napoli return to the top of the Serie A standings, level on points with Roma, who were also victorious on Sunday. Milan could also draw level with those two if they beat Juventus this evening.
For Genoa, the loss means they remain without a win in Serie A this season and will head into the international break in 19th place in the standings.
Despite the loss, Genoa’s performance was largely encouraging, and they will take heart from their efforts. However, they will need to improve their finishing if they are to start scoring wins consistently.
Napoli, on the other hand, will be buoyed by their victory and will look to build on their momentum when they return from the international break.
