Player’s representatives in talks with AC Milan over a season-long loan with an option to buy

Rasmus Hojlund still wants to stay at Manchester United but understands he may need to move to get regular playing time this season.

The Dane has played for United for two years after joining from Atalanta for £72m in 2023, but the arrival of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig this summer for a similar fee has cast doubt over his role in the team.

Hojlund was an unused substitute in United’s pre-season friendly against Fiorentina on Saturday, while Sesko was introduced to supporters before kick-off.

After the game, which ended 1-1 in regulation time, Ruben Amorim said his team had “struggled without a reference as a striker”, even though Hojlund was left on the bench.

The situation has prompted Hojlund and his representatives to look at possible alternatives, including a season-long loan to AC Milan with an option to buy.

Sources have indicated United are not actively pushing him out but felt a new striker signing was necessary and are prepared to consider both permanent and temporary offers.

Milan view Hojlund’s previous experience of Serie A, where he played for Atalanta before United signed him, as a strong indicator he could adapt quickly.
