Kasper Hjulmand is the clear favourite to become the new head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, according to reports.
Kasper Hjulmand is reportedly the top contender to replace Erik ten Hag as the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen.
The Danish coach has garnered attention for his impressive track record, including leading Denmark to the semi-finals of Euro 2021. Talks between Leverkusen and Hjulmand are said to be at an advanced stage, with some sources suggesting that a deal is “close to completion”.
Hjulmand’s experience coaching in Germany could be a significant advantage in his potential appointment. He previously managed Mainz 05, although his tenure was cut short due to disappointing results. Despite this, his familiarity with the German football landscape could help him hit the ground running at Leverkusen.
As the former Denmark national team coach, Hjulmand boasts an impressive resume. He guided Denmark to the 2022 World Cup and the Euro 2021 semi-finals. His teams are known for their possession-based style of play, and he has shown adaptability in his tactics.
Hjulmand stepped down as Denmark manager in July 2024, following a winless campaign at Euro 2024. His departure paved the way for Morten Wieghorst to take over as interim manager. The timing of his exit could work in Leverkusen’s favour, as they look to bolster their coaching staff.
