Bayer Leverkusen has officially appointed Kasper Hjulmand as their new head coach, following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag was let go after just two league games in charge, despite his impressive track record with Manchester United. Hjulmand, a 53-year-old Danish coach, has signed a two-year contract with Leverkusen until 2027.
The club’s managing director, Simon Rolfes, expressed delight in signing Hjulmand, citing his ability to develop a clear and dominant style of play. Rolfes believes Hjulmand is the right person to lead Leverkusen back to top form and achieve ambitious national and intercontinental goals.
As the former coach of the Denmark national team, Hjulmand brings significant experience and expertise to Leverkusen.
During his four-year tenure, he led Denmark to the semi-finals of Euro 2021 and the last 16 of Euro 2024. Hjulmand has also coached Nordsjaelland in Denmark and had a stint with Mainz in the Bundesliga during the 2014-15 season.
Hjulmand expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, praising Leverkusen as a well-run and highly ambitious club. He is motivated to shape the future of the team with both established and new players, aiming to bring success to the club.
Hjulmand’s first game in charge will be against high-flying Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday night.
The appointment of Hjulmand marks a new era for Leverkusen, who are looking to build on their success in the Bundesliga. With Hjulmand at the helm, the club aims to regain their dominance and achieve success in both national and international competitions.
Hjulmand’s experience and tactical acumen will be crucial in guiding Leverkusen’s young and talented squad.
