Portugal have won the UEFA Nations League twice, the most by any team in the competition.
Portugal edged out Spain in the UEFA Nations League on penalties and it was a tense affair. Portugal and Spain played out a tough 2-2 draw in regular time and it was one of the toughest matches so far in the Nations League. It was befitting of a final.
Spain had the lead in the first half through Zubimendi but it only lasted five minutes as Nuno Mendes rattled the back of the net with a clean strike. Spain would go in front again through Oyarzabal with just minutes to halftime, tipping the game in La Roja’s favour.
The second half was a tough one. Bruno Fernandes thought he had leveled the score for Portugal but his goal was ruled out for offside. Portugal needed to find a way and at these kind of moments, their main man, Cristiano Ronaldo thrives. He scored in the 61st minute to pull his team level and set up a very tense ending to the match.
Both sides couldn’t be separated in regular time and even in extra time, they were still level. The game went into penalties and at this point, it felt like it was all in God’s hand. Portugal won 5-3 on penalties after Diogo Costa denied Morata from the spot. This save and Ruben Neves’ penalty confirmed them as winners of the 2025 UEFA Nations League and two time champions of the competition.
