Ruben Amorim has praised Mason Mount for the hard work he is putting in to reinvigorate his Manchester United career and help the team.

On Thursday, the former Chelsea midfielder delivered his most decisive performance yet in a Manchester United shirt, scoring twice in the second half at Old Trafford to seal a 4-1 win over Athletic Club (7-1 on aggregate) and send his side into the Europa League final.

Mount’s resurgence has come at a crucial time for both player and club. The midfielder, who joined from Chelsea in a £55 million deal in July of 2023, has endured a frustrating career at the club plagued by injuries.

But after opening the scoring for United in last weekend’s Premier League match at Brentford, Mount followed it up with a brace on Thursday night, both goals taken in spectacular fashion and offering a glimpse of the player United had hoped they were signing in 2023.

“I’m so happy for him. He is such a player. He works really hard, he has quality,” said Amorim.

“When you see that kind of guy like Mason working hard every day, eating well, having ice baths, when you have this kind of player you just want to help him.

“He is perfect for this position as he can be a midfielder, but also runs like a winger so I’m really happy for him.”

Mount has now made 42 appearances for Manchester United, a relatively modest figure due to injury problems. But if he maintains fitness, Amorim hinted that it would make his own job a lot easier.

“When you have a full squad you can think about the game,” said the Portuguese. “Sometimes we’re surviving with people in different positions, but with more options you can change the game and push forwards and these things can help you win games.”
