England midfielder Jordan Henderson has pledged his support for Ben White, who was booed by fans during Friday’s friendly against Uruguay.

White, making his first England appearance since walking out of the 2022 World Cup squad, scored a late opener but also conceded a stoppage-time penalty.

The 28-year-old Arsenal defender received a mixed reaction from the Wembley crowd, with some fans unhappy about his return to the national team.

Henderson, who captained England against Uruguay, understands the pressure White is under.

“As teammates, we are always there to support,” Henderson said. “A lot of the fans will be in support of all the players.” Henderson knows what it’s like to face criticism from fans, having been booed after his move to Saudi Arabia.

Henderson believes some fans don’t even know why they’re booing White, citing media influence. “Some of the fans probably don’t even know why they are booing. They listen to what is being said in the media, and a lot of the time, what the media says isn’t true,” he said.

White’s England manager, Thomas Tuchel, has given him a second chance after explaining his self-imposed exile to the squad. Henderson agrees it’s up to the team to support White through this tough time.

“Ben has been good since he came back in, and we will support him as teammates,” Henderson said. “A few of us have been there. It is difficult when it is you, but you have to try not to take it too personally.”

Henderson was delighted White scored, saying, “I was delighted he got on and got a goal, which is the most important thing.”
